Symptoms of Acid Reflux (Heartburn)
By Sunil Punjabi of Sierra Infotech
Many individuals all over the world experience Symptoms of Acid Reflux, Heartburn, or GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease) either on a daily basis or occasionally. Acid reflux occurs when the liquid and semi-solid contents of the stomach regurgitates or refluxes back into the esophagus. The stomach uses some acid and enzymes to digest the food that an individual eats. Sometimes the liquid and the semi-solid content which contain some acid from the stomach, regurgitates or refluxes back up the food pipe and esophagus, and causes Heartburn and one of the Symptoms of Acid reflux. Acid reflux and heartburn are usually experienced at night due to the fact that many individuals eat heavy, oily and spicy food, and go to bed. The partially digested food in the stomach combined with the acid, instead of traveling to the small intestine for further digestion, travels back into the esophagus. Acid Reflux and Heartburn can also occur during the day due to overeating, oily and spicy food, and taking a nap immediately after eating. Other factors, which contribute to Acid Reflux, are cigarettes, caffeine, chocolates, obesity, alcohol, and pregnancy and delayed stomach emptying. Although Acid Reflux can occur occasionally, it can also be experienced on a regular or daily basis, which leads to a more serious condition like GERD or Gastroesophageal reflux disease. An individual who experiences Symptoms of Acid Reflux or heartburn occasionally, can use medication for relief, but regular occurrences of Acid Reflux require proper medical attention. To understand GERD, an individual needs to understand the Symptoms of Acid Reflux. Some of the Symptoms are as follows: Intestinal Gas Frequent burping or frequent passing of gas from the rectum, or a noisy gurgling stomach Difficulty in Swallowing Difficulty in swallowing food or pushing it down the throat after chewing. This could be due to other reasons but could also be a symptom of Acid Reflux. Pain or Burning while swallowing Pain or burning sensation when swallowing food. The food that an individual eats travels down the esophagus to the stomach and a burning sensation could be a symptom of Acid Reflux, although it could be due to other reasons and medical conditions too. Vomiting and Nausea Although nausea and vomiting after eating can be experienced due to other medical reasons, it also occurs in GERD, and is a Symptom of Acid Reflux. Vomiting can be mild or severe enough to regurgitate almost all the food that an individual has eaten. Recurring Abdominal Pain Recurring upper abdominal pain too can be due to a variety of medical reasons and conditions, but if the other Symptoms of Acid Reflux are present, it can be a sign of GERD. Some individuals may not experience some of the Symptoms of Acid Reflux like heartburn and regurgitation, but in fact may experience some other symptoms like Chest Pain or the sensation that the food they have eaten is trapped behind the breastbone. Chest Pain too is a common Symptom, although it could also be due to a Heart condition or angina. Some of the less common Symptoms of Acid Reflux are a dry cough, hoarseness, and sensation of a lump in the throat, chronic sore throat, and persistent hiccups. |
